Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE)
“If we could look into each other's hearts and understand the unique challenges each of us faces, I think we would treat each other much more gently, with more love, patience, tolerance, and care.”
- Marvin J. Ashton
At Salfords Primary School, we deliver a bespoke PSHE curriculum that supports our children in fostering lifelong aspirations, goals and values as well as becoming independent, healthy and responsible members of society. Our hope is that the knowledge and skills that they develop will enable them to thrive now and in the future.
Learning opportunities are spread across three core themes: Health and Wellbeing, Relationships, and Living in the Wider World. These core themes cover topics such as:
-
the physical, social and emotional well-being of pupils.
-
British values.
-
diversity in our country as a whole in terms of race, religion, and relationships.
-
tolerance and respect.
-
current and relevant social issues.
-
how to articulate feelings.
-
using technology safely and responsibly.
PSHE is taught weekly from Reception to Year 6 and is discussion based within a safe and secure environment where every child’s opinions and ideas are respected.

Relationship and Sex Education (RSE)
In September 2020, the Department for Education made Relationships and Sex Education and Health Education compulsory in all schools.
The new guidance focuses on healthy relationships and keeping children safe in the modern world. It also covers a wide range of topics relating to physical and mental health, wellbeing, safeguarding and healthy relationships. Learning about the emotional, social and physical aspects of growing up, will give young people the information, skills and positive values to have safe, fulfilling relationships and will help them take responsibility for their own well-being. All of the sessions will be age-appropriate and meet the needs of all pupils in the class.
